My wife and I were both previously
married. We both have children from our first
marriages, and we just recently (2/2/2005) had our own
son together. So now we're part of the growing norm of
his, hers, and ours families!
While in the labor and delivery room, She was watching
Dr. Phil. Yes, she was in labor with contractions about
1 minute apart, but she still had to see Dr. Phil… I
kept trying to put on soft music, but she said it's time
for Dr. Phil, turn on the TV. On this particular show,
Dr. Phil was talking with couples on the brink of
divorce. One couple's situation was that the wife was
abusive, to the point of having stabbed the husband. In
giving advice to them, he told her to let go of her
fears of loosing control and then he told the husband
that he had to be her soft place to fall. The phrase
“Soft place to fall” struck a chord with me. I wrote it
down and put it in my pocket. I was also thinking that
if my wife stabbed me, I'd be long gone!! By the
time my wife and son came home from the hospital, I had
pretty much finished writing “Soft Place to Fall”.
Soft Place to Fall
When your days are long
When your steps are all up hill
When it seems no one hears you
And you heart's afraid to feel
When mistakes are made
When plans fall apart
When you've given all you have
You've reached the bottom of your heart
Remember I'll be here
I'll never leave your side at all
I'll have my arms wide open
To catch you if you should fall
When your days are cloudy
And you can't find the sun at all
Just trust your heart and let go
I'll always be your soft place to fall
When tempers flair
When I loose my way
When the things that really matter
Get pushed back day by day
When I rush around
To busy to breathe
And fail to see the miracle
Life is to conceive
Remember I'll be here
I'll never leave your side at all
I'll have my arms wide open
To catch you if you should fall
When your days are cloudy
And you can't find the sun at all
Just trust your heart and let go
I'll always be your soft place to fall
